Japanese architect Takanobu Kishimoto found a site for a new home in Takasago City, Hyogo, Japan. The only problem was that there was one large and iconic artefact sitting in its premises: an old train car.
Instead of tearing it down, Kishimoto did his research and discovered that it is somewhat of an icon in the town, once serving as a community center. He kept it onsite and decided to incorporate the old train car into the design of the house.
The house, named ‘Plathome’, features a platform-shaped home adjacent to the train car. It allows the homeowner to have an extra space for storing firewood, or even entering the train carriage for extra living space whenever necessary.
