An Art Style Guide For Popular Comic Book, ‘The Beano’

London-based design firm Hemingway Design has created a full set of brand and character guidelines for the popular comic book, The Beano.

The consultancy was approached by Beano publisher DC Thompson to come up with a style guide for Beano-licensed products.

When the team at Hemingway Design went through the DC Thompson archive, they found enough original art and hand-drawn fonts, prompting them to create a Beano alphabet.

They also found that a lof ot the sound-effect artwork had resemblance to famous pop art works, yet the Beano comics were designed ten years before pop art gained popularity.

This set of guidelines comes at a timely moment of the Beano comic’s its 75th birthday. For its’ celebrations, Hemingway Design has also designed Beanotown, a temporary exhibition at London’s Southbank Centre.
