The ‘AlteredBarbie’ show in San Francisco has been an annual event since 2003, featuring works from emerging and established artists. The artists use Barbie and Ken dolls to make art that reflects current events in society, or their own imaginations.
Most of the artworks concentrate on completely altering the public’s perception of the prim and perfect Barbie, no-holds-barred—she is decapitated, dressed in flouncy costumes, and placed in the most bizarre situations.
