Tourism New Zealand recently installed a giant pop-up book that recreates scenes from the Hobbit film The Desolation of Smaug at the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles.

‘The Book of New Zealand’ was created by the film's digital effects company WETA Digital and production company 3 Foot 7 using actual movie sets and footage projections, telling the story of how the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand were transformed into Middle Earth.

The 50-foot tall installation featured locations from the film like Hidden Bay, Forest River, Lake Town, and Beorn’s House, and visitors could step into the giant book and explore them.

Kevin Bowler, Chief Executive of Tourism New Zealand, said “People who step into the pages of the book are taken on a unique journey that combines the magic of Middle-Earth and The Hobbit Trilogy with the reality of New Zealand, bringing the tourism experience of New Zealand to life.”
