Ever been in the situation where you have a great bottle of wine, but don’t have a corkscrew to open it?

Wine makers Uproot Wines feel you, and know what it’s like.

So besides ditching the idea of enjoying some of that vino, how do you get out of that situation? MacGyver it.

A useful chart by Uproot, ‘How To Open A Bottle Of Wine Without A Corkscrew’, highlights four makeshift methods to get past the cork to the alcohol, when without the proper tools.

‘The Shoe Technique’ requires you to use your shoe, where you’ve to hit the shoe (with the wine bottle snugly in it) till the pressure within the wine bottle slowly forces the cork out—until it’s far out enough to pull it out.

‘The Screw Technique’ requires a screw, and a hammer or a pair of pliers: turn the screw into the cork, then use the hammer or pliers to slowly pull the cork out.

‘The Coat Hanger Technique’ requires you to straighten and bend the hook of a coat hanger for it to resemble a fish hook. Thereafter, push it down the side of the cork till it’s reached the bottom of the cork, hook the cork, then gently pull it out.

Lastly, ‘The Bike Pump Technique’ requires only a bike pump. Insert the pump needle into the middle of the cork, then pump slowly to give the cork pressure—this causes the cork to slowly rise. When the cork’s out enough, you can pull it out of the bottle.

Check the methods out below, or head over to Uproot to find out more.
