China Environmental Protection Foundation has collaborated with DDB China to create an outdoor green campaign to promote the environmental benefits of walking over driving.

Called the ‘Green Pedestrian Crossing’, the campaign involved laying enormous canvases of bare leafless trees over 132 pedestrian crossings in 15 Chinese cities.

On each side of the crossing, sponges soaked in green, environmentally friendly, washable paint were placed.

As pedestrians crossed the road, they would create green footprints on the canvas—making it look like leaves were growing on the tree—sending the message to people that they could create a green environment by walking instead of driving.

According to the agency, over 3.9 million people participated in this outdoor campaign.
