PANTONE Creates A Tool To Help Identify Precise Skin Tones

After launching its own makeup line earlier this year, PANTONE has teamed up with Sephora to create a color-matching tool for skin.

Called the ‘Sephora + PANTONE Color IQ’, the hand-held color-matching tool—developed by X-rite—helps its users identify the precise color of their skin to help them scientifically-find the perfect shade of foundation they should use, amongst different brands and formulas.

By scanning the surface of their skin with Color IQ, the device will cross-reference the results against the ‘PANTONE X-Rite Spectrocolorimeter’ color library, and assign an official PANTONE skin-tone number.

Gilbert Soliz, Sephora Pro, said in a statement: “Sephora + PANTONE COLOR IQ eliminates many of the variables that can affect shade selection, including pigment challenges, skin texture and undertones which can often distort the clients match.”

“As an artist, I know the right foundation is essential to a great makeup look so this is an amazing resource to have for my consultations. It allows me to pull the best matches across all our brand offerings for my clients personalized consultation,” Soliz added.

The Color IQ is available to be used in-stores at Times Square Sephora in Manhattan, Powell Street Sephora in San Francisco.

“We see this as the first application of this patented Sephora exclusive technology, and are excited to expand its capabilities for other uses in the color world,” Margarita Arriagada, SVP of Merchandising at Sephora, said.

The device seems like a technology-advanced version of the PANTONE skin tone color chart created by artist Pierre David; what do you think?
