The Next Intense Sporting Event: ‘Siesta World Cup’

Looking for a new sporting event to watch now that the Olympics is over?



Over in São Paulo, there is an intense competition so taxing that only Latinos have ever won—the Siesta World Cup.



For the launch of Comedy Central in Latin America earlier this year, Wieden+Kennedy São Paulo created the little-known ‘sporting’ championship for its tongue-in-cheek ad.



The Siesta World Cup is a global event that proves how serious it is to take a nap, and operates at a much slower pace for anyone to beat the world record, but comes with its own drama.



The documentary-style spot aims to celebrate how non-serious Latinos really are, and their ability to make fun of themselves and their traditional naps during the day.



To make a link with the ‘seriousness’ of the event, the commercial ends with the tagline: “Finally a TV Channel as serious as we are”.



“The idea is simple: make TV viewers laugh and remind them how good it feels to watch Comedy Central shows, which are 100% humor,” Guillermo Vega, W+K São Paulo’s executive creative director, said in a statement.
