Dr Seuss, also known as Theodor Seuss Geisel, is most well known for his children’s books, such as Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.
However, did you know that the American poet and writer once tried his hand at “adult” books?
Maria Popova of Brian Pickings discovered Dr Seuss’ “first book for adults”: The Seven Lady Godivas: The True Facts Concerning History’s Barest Family.
Originally published in 1939, the book tells of seven nudist sisters who swore to postpone their marriage to the seven Peeping brothers, when their father died from being thrown off a horse.
Through the journey, each sister discovered a ‘truth’ about horses—which creatively tell of the ‘origins’ of commonly known proverbs that are about horses.
Illustrated in Seuss’ renown style, the book is actually more humorous and less perverse than it’s thought to be.
