Whatever you may think about the writing in the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy, there is no doubt that the books have done exceedingly well globally.
To ride on the books’ success, Swedish fashion retailer KappAhl has collaborated with author Erika L. James to design a lingerie collection that consists of bras, briefs, stockings, negligees, a lacy black mask and a grey tie.
Unexpectedly, the predominant use of grey in the collection seems to be the only element to be derived from its literary muse—instead of being extra-raunchy and bordering on the shocking, the designs are conventionally sexy and almost modest.
According to a KappAhl spokesperson, the collection is based on what they imagined the female readers of 50 Shades of Grey would wear and feel sensual in, which explains why there is not even a hint of the domination theme that is so prevalent in the books.
While these pieces of tasteful lingerie would no doubt appeal to the mass market, Mark Wilson of Fast Co. Design feels that its inability to bring across the thrilling deviance, which plays such a central role in the books, is “a real missed design opportunity”.
What do you think about this surprisingly conservative lingerie collection?
