Fascinated with the tension within the spikes of the sea urchin, artist Jennifer Maestre started making sculptures of them.
After experimenting with materials like nails, zippers and other elements, the artist finally found her medium with colored pencils.
To make a sculpture, Maestre cuts pencils into 1-inch sections, drills a hole in them and stitches them together like beads.
As a result, these sculptures are both intriguing and repulsive, mimicking that of sea urchins.
