Architect students, Petr Novikov, Inder Shergill and Anna Kulik from the Institute for Advance Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) have created a robotic 3D printer that is capable of producing sculptures made out of sand.
Called the ‘Stone Spray’, it uses sand as a base material, while a liquid solidifier binds and hardens the sand grains when sprayed onto a surface—allowing it to create beautiful, intricate sand sculptures.
The robot is controlled via a computer and unlike other 3D printers, it can print ‘multi-directionally’—even on vertical surfaces.
The Stone Spray robot was created as part of a research project to ‘push the boundaries of digital manufacturing’ and ‘explore the possibilities’ of on-site fabrication machines.
