UK architecture firm Atkins has designed a hotel to be located on an abandoned water-filled quarry in the outskirts of Shanghai, China.
The hotel is ‘The Songjang Hotel’, and it will feature a huge waterfall that pours down from the roof of the 19-storey building. Part of the body of the hotel will be built into the quarry cave, with two floors completely beneath the water.
A sports facility for extreme sports will also offer rock climbing and bungee jumping at the location, with an underwater restaurant facing a ten-metre deep aquarium.
Another specialty of this hotel is its plans for green sustainability. The building will use geothermal technologies to generate its own electricity and lighting, while greenery will blanket a roof that extends just two storeys above the edge of the quarry.
