Artist Creates First-Ever Interactive Artwork Using Google Glass Technology

New York-based artist David Datuna has worked with software developer BrickSimple to create the first-ever piece of interactive artwork that incorporates cutting-edge Google Glass technology.

Entitled ‘Portrait Of America’, it features a 12-foot sculpture of the American flag made up of approximately 2,000 eyeglass lenses and 400 tiny portraits of famous people, past and present, including George Washington and Lady Gaga, that have helped shape America.

By putting on a pair of Google Glass, the viewer’s voice will trigger a series of short video clips that will be played in the viewfinder of the Glass, and questions on democracy and power such as, “What is the greatest invention?” will be posed.

Cameras embedded in the artwork as well as the in-built one in the Glass will then record the answers and take a portrait of the viewer. It will all be put together in a digital collage and sent out for the world to view via social media.

Want to check it out? It’s currently at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC.
