Shanghai-based designers Niek van Wingerden and Stephen Wright have interpreted the logos of six famous Western brands in Chinese.
Walt Disney’s Chinese logo features the original’s distinctive cursive font and baby blue shade while the Chinese characters for The New York Times were extracted from the gothic script of the original Latin typeface.
The duo wanted to see if they could adapt the logos into Chinese characters while maintaining the visual identity of the original typography. They were created using the official Chinese names where possible, or the closest phonetic translations.
van Wingerden added that though China is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, most Western brands shy away from using their official Chinese names for fear of diluting their brand identity.
