Based in New York City, motion graphics and video production agency Dress Code has made a fascinating short film, titled Font Men, “that gives a peek behind the curtain into the world” of legendary type designers Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones.

The pair of iconic typographers recently made headlines with their very public split, but this documentary focuses on the more positive aspects of their partnership, which gave birth to the H+FJ type design studio, one of the most successful and prestigious of its kind in the world.

Delving into the backgrounds and career paths of each designer, the short film also sheds light on their working processes, giving us enlightening insights into how they make their wonderful typefaces that are used by well-known brands and personalities, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart and President Barack Obama.

For instance, do you know that the letters ‘H’, ‘O’ and ‘D’ are usually the first three to be made for each font the studio designs?

To find out why, watch the six-minute-long video below. The film was presented by AIGA to celebrate H+FJ’s AIGA Medal, and is part of SXSW 2014 Official Selection.
