In collaboration with Komuro Manufacturing Co., Tokyo-based Japanese freelance product designer Yuma Kano has redesigned the screw to imbue this easily over-looked everyday object with emotion and personality.
The designer has altered the head of the common screw so that instead of the familiar horizontal line or cross, it now displays a cheer-inducing smiley face.
These fun screws come with their own specialized screw-driver and is able to perform all the usual functions of regular screws.
According to Yuma, the design concept is inspired by “the enjoyment of sharing the joy of discovering small surprises with others”—realizing that the screws on the wall or furniture are smiling back at us would certainly make for a delightful discovery.
The “Screw:)” project shows that making small design changes to the commonplace objects that we take for granted can bring joy to our daily lives—watch the video below to find out how these smiley screws are made.
