Based in Denver, Colorado, artists Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker—known collectively as Hari & Deepti—specialize in paper cut light boxes that tell tall tales filled with wonderful and imaginative characters.

Creating amazingly intricate scenes with layers of carefully cut watercolor paper, each diorama is brought to life with strips of flexible LED light that completely transform the unlit artwork.

The duo is “drawn towards the imaginative aspect of story telling and seek inspiration from them”—they use the versatile qualities of paper to great effect by playing with light to create depth and illusions.

Their paper artworks often feature surrealist elements and wonderful characters, including monsters and gigantic wolves—one of their standout piece is a large-scale light box that was built for the window display of the AIGA National Center in New York City.

Watch the video below for behind-the-scene footage that shows how the epic “Rise & Skate” light box was made.
