Designer Matchboxes With Beautifully Patterned Striking Areas

Beautifully made products can turn the most mundane of everyday tasks into an enjoyable one—designers Clara von Zweigbergk and Shane Schneck teamed up with Danish design house HAY to do just that for the act of striking a match.

The “Strike” collection of redesigned matchboxes is colorful and eye-catching—while the striking area is usually merely functional, it has now become part of the matchbox’s design.

In Schneck’s words, “The common matchbox is used almost exclusively for advertising while the intricate red phosphorus pattern along the sides are secondary to the advert. Strike honors the activity of creating a flame.”

The collection has won a Wallpaper Design Award 2014 for “Best Fireside”—it is now available for sale at HAY.
