We have charted the rise and fall of “Flappy Bird”—a game so popular that it was downloaded over 50 million times but was suddenly pulled out from the app store. Now, entrepreneur Fawn Qiu has created her own real life-version of the game.
Qiu built the game with an Arduino, three motors, a prototyping board, a magnet sensor, and an old cardboard box, drawing inspiration from some of her previous projects.
This game is just as addictive as the original—set against a scrolling background, players navigate with a set of controls out of the box. Once the bird hits a pipe, the box closes and the game is over.
“I think creating a physical game makes the playing experience more approachable. It's no longer just one player and the phone, but people around you are also aware of the game, which invites collaboration and curiosity,” she stated.
