Calligraphy and comics might seem like an odd pairing, but Chinese artist Xing Jia-Yi has combined the two forms for a web comic called ‘Listening To Rain.’
Kevin Tang of BuzzFeed has compiled a collection of Xing’s drawings here, complete with loose translations from the original Chinese text. As its name implies, the comic is perfect for reading on rainy days.
Scenes of everyday life are poetically rendered in light black brush strokes, giving them a soft, romantic feel. A dragon and a dog make conversation while standing under umbrellas in the rain, cars and pedestrians go about their routes, and an airplane flies overhead, its outline nearly obscured by dark clouds.
Magical and evocative, Xing’s beautiful illustrations will surely conjure the pitter patter and smell of rain, and are a lovely reminder that we should slow down and appreciate the beauty around us.
