Designer Creatively Turns Carpets Into Colorful, Clownish Masks

Dutch designer Bertjan Pot has created a series entitled ‘Masks’ in which he gives traditional folkloric masks a modern look and spin by stitching together thin strands of multicolored rope that are often used for weaving carpets.

He takes his inspiration for the masks from the rounded and curved patterns of the human face, such as the eyes and the mouth, exaggerating them to clownish effect.

He described his artwork, “Although seemingly these masks tell stories, this again started out as a material experiment. I wanted to find out if by stitching a rope together I could make a large flat carpet. Instead of flat, the samples got curvy. When I was about to give up on the carpet, Vladi (a friend) came up with the idea of shaping the rope into masks. The possibilities are endless, I’m meeting new faces every day.”
