The Latest Internet Trend In The UK: ‘Scotch Tape Selfies’

Remember photographer Wes Naman’s ‘Scotch Tape’ portrait series, where he wraps the faces of his subjects with strips of scotch tape? Apparently, this humorous act is currently all the rage in the UK now.

‘Scotch tape selfies’ or ‘sellotape selfies’ is the act of wrapping one’s face with tape, taking a self-portrait, and sharing the image online.

This new ‘selfie trend’ was started by 21-year-old Brighton University student Lizzie Durley, who was inspired by the movie Yes Man, which starred Jim Carrey.

“I was having a bad day and remembered that scene from the film which really tickled me,” she told the Daily Mail. “I figured people were getting bored of the whole ‘selfie’ craze – I know I was. So I just applied the concepts of the selfie to this idea and it resulted in Sellotape selfies!”

Wanting to share her idea to the world, she created a Sellotape Selfie Facebook page, which has taken the internet by storm.

It currently has over 162,000 page likes, and she’s constantly bombarded with images from selfie enthusiasts around the country. She even received a submission from Jim Carrey himself on Twitter.

“The concept is applicable to literally anyone, everyone can join in, there’s no risk of offence, and people just love to have a giggle,” she added.

Do you think this selfie trend will catch on with the rest of the world?
