Japanese lifestyle brand MUJI, known for its minimalist and functional clothing and household items, has made its first foray into interior design with the opening of Narita Airport’s new Terminal 3.

A collaboration with Tokyo-based architecture firm Nikken Sekkei and Japanese creative lab Party, the highlight of the new low-cost carrier terminal is a striking track and field-inspired walkway.

Instead of the usual conveyor walkways and illuminated signs, it features real running tracks that are conducive for walking, along with user-friendly directional signs to help passengers navigate the space.

Due to budget constraints—the final budget was half the initial amount proposed—the collaborative team opted to create a unique walking experience instead.

With its bright white, blue and red color scheme, we think the running track is a modern and refreshing change from the ubiquitous moving walkways found in other airport terminals.
