Before the phone goes on sale on Friday, 21 September, more than 2 million iPhone 5 units have already been pre-ordered in 24 hours—doubling the record set by the iPhone 4S last year.
Many who have pre-ordered might get to see their new iPhones only in October due to the exceeded demand.
“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to the iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” Phil Schiller, Apple’s marketing chief, said in a statement.
The iPhone 5 was unveiled on Wednesday 12 September 2012.
Queues are already forming outside Apple Stores ahead of the iPhone’s release on Friday.
The device is available in 16GB at US$199; 32GB at US$299; and 64GB atUS$399.
