Photographer Turns Food Into ‘Underworld Ghetto’

French photographer Nadege Meriau has taken food photography to a new level as she transforms food to look like the ‘seventh circle of hell’.

Looking at Meraio’s meticulous photos, viewers are shown the ‘dark side’ of food—as if they are taking a trip into a forbidden underworld.

“If in fairy tales, houses are made of sweets, Nadege Meriau does the reverse, transforming the edible into a dwelling, making architectures of fibers, vegetables and porous matter,” said Olivier Richon, head of photography at RCA where Mariau studied.

“This is an architecture of the digestible, made of curves and unexpected textures, that recall the art of the rocaille, or when a grotto is endowed with a viscosity that reminds us of a digestive apparatus.”
