Directed by Virgilio Villoresi and illustrated by Virginia Mori, the music video for John Mayer’s song ‘Submarine Test January 1967’, is a charming short film that uses beautiful hand-animated drawings.
The video was filmed entirely in live-action, and no post production effects were used.
Instead, an old pre-cinema technique called ‘ombro cinema’ was used. This involves moving a striped piece of transparent film across the illustrations, resulting in a stroboscopic illusion.
