Artist Tony Matelli’s latest artwork is an incredibly life-like statue of a naked balding middle-aged man stumbling around in a sleep-induced trance, save for his white underwear.
Entitled ‘Sleepwalker’, the statue was recently moved from Wellesley College’s Davis Museum to an area with high traffic in an all-women campus.
Intrigued by how freakishly life-like he looks, curious locals have been stopping to take closer looks and even selfies with him. Other reactions have not been as positive. A local commented, “There’s nothing I want less than a statue of a naked dude lurking outside my dorm window.”
In response to detractors, museum director Melissa Fischman stands by the decision for the statue to stay put because, “Art provokes dialogue, and discourse is the core of education”.
