Last Friday, hundreds of schoolboys from 27 high schools in Nantes, western France, wore skirts to fight sexism.
It was part of a student-led initiative called ‘Lift the Skirt’ that aimed to raise awareness of discrimination and sexism faced by female students.
The campaign, which was backed by education authorities, saw many young men gamely donning skirts to show support for gender equality.
The bold move provoked outrage among the right-wing conservative group Manif pour Tous (Protest For All), which also railed against France’s legalization of same sex marriage in 2013.
Students from the Lycée Clemenceau school and around 200 supporters of the group were involved in a tense confrontation on Thursday, which was dispersed after police stepped in.
Despite the controversy, most of the male pupils ignored it and went about their day clad in skirts.
