Typically, we would like our taxis to get to our destinations as quickly as possible as every jump on the meter means having to fork out more money—but being in a rush may also mean a less safe, relaxing and eco-friendly commute.
In Japan, there is a new taxi service named “Turtle Taxi” that would deliberately go slow upon request by the passenger—by simply pressing a button at the back of the taxi, you can signal to the taxi driver that he or she can stop the engine at red lights, accelerate more gradually and keep off the fast lane.
Catering to people who are not in a hurry, the service has seen an interest from pregnant ladies, the elderly and those who are traveling with sleeping children—according to the Japan Daily Press, one mother thinks that “it is perfect for those times when I don’t want to have my sleeping child woken up”.
Not only does the Turtle Taxi provide for a smoother ride, it also makes your ride less harmful for the environment. While it is currently only operating in Yokohama, the company has plans to expand its service to other city centers, including Tokyo.
