To give people a fun reason to lead a more sustainable lifestyle, Petomato is a urban gardening concept that allows its users to grow vegetables in used plastic bottles that would otherwise be destined for landfills.
Originally from Japan, this idea was brought in to the US market by Laura and Robert Engels of Angel Sales Inc.—not only is this a great way to recycle the large number of plastic bottles used in the U.S.A, but it would also educate children about gardening and sustainable practices.
Petomato comes in the form of a bottle cap that you can screw onto a plastic bottle—simply fill it up with seeds, wait for it to germinate and grow into a baby plant. It is capable of producing vegetables “24/7, 365 days a year”.
Currently, you can choose to grow seven different plants, including sweet basil, wild strawberries and fresh mint. Each Petomato costs US$14.99 and you can buy them here.
