The four-footed robot, developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from DARPA’s Maximum Mobility and Manipulation program, has set a new land speed record for legged robots and humans.
During a treadmill test, ‘Cheetah’ surpassed its previous record of 18mph set earlier this year, with a new speed record of 28.3mph—about 0.5mph faster than the fastest man on earth Usain Bolt (27.28mph).
However, according to the research team, the Cheetah has a slight advantage running on a treadmill.
The high-speed running robot will be tested on natural terrain next year.
Robot Cheetah also stands no chance against the animal it mimics—real cheetahs are said to be able to run as fast as 60mph.
