Amsterdam-based architectural firm LKSVDD has transformed a church in Haarlo, Netherlands, into a special residential loft with hints of humor.
Called ‘God’s Loft Story’, the structure of the old church was renovated and, its space, reinterpreted—and a 40-foot shipping contained was added as an extension.
Combining respect and humor regarding the building’s religious origin, the firm added elements such as a “stairway to have fun”, an office with a swing and cross lights, a red “holy shit” toilet, and wooden sheep in the garden—while the wooden roof, stained-glass windows and panel doors were restored and preserved—to give the loft its authentic character.
The “stairway to have fun” also works as a multi-functional room-divider between the kitchen, living room and office.
