Madrid-based Spanish artist Santiago Sierra created the “World’s Largest Graffiti”, according to the artist.
The piece is made up of the letters “S.O.S”, and measures 5km x 1.7km.
According to Sierra, the piece is meant to refer to “the Saharaui people’s struggle for independence from Moroccan rule in the almost forgotten West Saharan conflict. For 36 years, they have lived in makeshift conditions under the provisional arrangement of the refugee camps in the Sahara desert, south east of Tindouf”.
The letters were carved into the ground of Western Sahara/Algeria near the Saharaui refugee camp Smara, in collaboration with Artifarati and Frente Polisario, in October 2012.
