‘Vertical Video Syndrome’ refers to videos shot in portrait mode, resulting in them resembling a thin band flanked by thick black bars. According to app company Evil Window Dog, they are “the worst type of video a human being can lay eyes on.”
Frustrated at the sheer number of badly-filmed videos on YouTube and elsewhere, they have created ‘Horizon’, an iOS app for the iPhone and iPad that promises to put an end to this nonsense.
The app eliminates the ugly black bars around videos by shooting in landscape mode regardless of how you hold your phone or tablet. It uses your iOS device’s gyroscope to automatically level videos while you film, ensuring your videos always stay horizontal.
It also includes nine Instagram-style filters, and settings to film videos in different resolutions and aspect ratios.
Horizon is available for US$0.99 from the App store.
