‘The Converts’ is an ongoing photo series by Boston-based photographer Claire Beckett, in which she captures portraits of Americans who have converted to Islam.
Beckett captures both recent converts and long-time practicing Muslims, pondering the question: “what does it mean to be an American”.
She wrote, “In a society that, however falsely, often constructions ‘American’ and ‘Muslim’ as diametrical opposites, what is the experience of people who have transversed this imagined line.”
“In this project I explore how converts understand themselves, as well as the relationships that they have with their birth and adopted religions, families and cultures.”
