Believing that smartphone pictures should match the image quality of DSLRs, three National University of Singapore graduates have created the “Ladibird”, an iPhone case that is also a fully-functioning, professional camera.

Sliding easily over an iPhone 5, the Ladibird houses a mirrorless CMOS image sensor and 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. This allows users to shoot portraits where the subjects are in sharp focus while the background is prettily blurred with a bokeh-like effect.

The key selling point of this device is that its high-quality images could be shared instantly with friends and family via social media—the iPhone itself is effectively a storage and transmission medium in this case.

The Ladibird held a successful funding campaign on Indigogo last year—those who didn’t get to enjoy the early bird promotion would have to pay about US$300 for it when it is released in the market.

While this seems like a great gadget for serious iPhonographers, PetaPixel has expressed doubts about the Ladibird’s promise to deliver “DSLR-quality” photographs.
