Although David LaChapelle is known for photographing well-known public figures, his latest series features “gas stations” and “oil refineries” coated in an ethereal glow.
Set against a jungle, these commonplace features of our modern world are given an otherworldly look, as though we are visiting planet Earth in some distant future.
LaChapelle’s series has an environmental slant and suggests that our industrialization is closely tied to the world’s future—despite warning us to protect our planet, these images contain a kind of haunting beauty in showcasing the potential destruction of human civilization.
Made with recycled material from his studio, like using energy drink cans as pipes, these “gas stations” are given a psychedelic look, as the photographer uses bright colors to engage with his viewers in these images.
What do you think—does this photo series convey its purpose, or does its beauty distract its viewers from the message?
LaChapelle’s work is being exhibited at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York till 1 March 2014.
