Created by Yannick Mathey and Louis Rémi-Babé, ‘Prototypo’ is an online open source app that lets users ‘make’ and download their own fonts.
“Prototypo includes over twenty parameters to modify all built-in glyphs at once. Hobbyist[s] and professional type designers can play, experiment and refine a wide range of body text fonts,” the website stated. At present, the app has a range of fonts and users can tweak different aspects of a typeface to ‘create’ a more unique one.
So far, this app is downloadable—the makers will release a beta version and start a crowdfunding campaign to develop it further.
The software currently supports A to Z glyphs, pre-defined styles and works in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Safari. Other features like set spacing and kerning, and alternate glyphs will be added later.
You can try this software out here—do you think this app will change the way we make fonts, or is the more traditional, time-consuming method better?
