San Francisco-based graphic designer Brian Singer has embarked on a project to get motorists to put their phones down while on the road.
The ‘Texting While In Traffic’ campaign aims to shame texting drivers by gathering and posting photos of them on billboards around the city.
In an interview with Gizmodo, Singer said he came up with the idea after noticing many drivers texting on their phones while commuting along the 101 Freeway, though it’s illegal in California and most states.
He collates photos of offenders on his website which includes statistics about distracted driving, and invites readers to submit their own pictures. For the record, he takes the photos as a passenger and requires contributors to be passengers too.
Singer hopes to raise awareness of this risky behavior and get people to think twice before they pick up their phones while in traffic. He approached several distracted driving organizations to fund the billboards, but ended up paying for them himself.
The billboards will remain up throughout April, which coincidentally happens to be Distracted Driver Awareness Month.
If you live in San Francisco and would like to submit your own pictures of texting drivers, head over here. What do you think of Singer’s campaign?
