Apple has announced that it will debut ‘CarPlay’, an in-car interface that is designed to sync with an iPhone, at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show.
According to the company, the software aims to offer an intuitive interface that is more user-friendly and that helps to minimize distractions on the road. It is modeled on the iOS 7 in both its look and use.
Drivers manage their calls and messages via voice commands to Siri, who also handles eye-free navigation with the Maps app. They can also sync their contacts, emails, texts or recent trips with the system, and coordinate with traffic conditions through the Maps app to determine the best route.
Users can access their music, podcasts and audiobooks through in-car controls or voice commands to Siri. As the interface is the same as an iPhone’s, users can expect a seamless experience managing their audio library.
‘CarPlay’ will launch in Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo vehicles initially, and is expected to roll out to other car companies including BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company and Jaguar Land Rover, among others.
It will be available as an update for iOS 7 and is compatible with the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C and iPhone 5.
