Train Company Gives Writers Free Rides, Invites Them To Work In Transit

Trains and literature do not often go together, but train company Amtrak has made that link by offering writers free “residencies” on trains throughout its network of routes.

The idea to give writers free rides for the sole purpose of creating conducive environment for them work stemmed from a Twitter conversation that senior editor of Quartz Zach Seward and writer Jessica Gross had with Amtrak.

Collaborating with Amtrak’s social media team, Gross set up an inaugural residency on a round-trip train from New York to Chicago and back again.

She enjoyed this residency-in-transit and has detailed her “work trip” on The Paris Review.

Amtrak is turning its writer residency program into a regular operation—if you would like to write on trains for free, find out how you can apply for it here.
