Finnish photographer Herra Kuulapaa, who specializes in high speed ballistics, has spent seven years working on a dangerous project—capturing images of speeding bullets milliseconds after they have been shot.
His fascinating pictures capture the violence with which a bullet is expelled from a gun and its forceful velocity as it rips through the air—these are bullets that are typically traveling at 1,200 feet per second.
Other than a lone speeding bullet, each of these pictures also freezes the clouds of flames resulting from the blast that sometimes seem to engulf the shooter. The information found in these images is being used by gun and ammunition manufacturers to improve their products—for instance, recoil and muzzle flash.
The photographer’s latest method of taking stereoscopic 3D ballistics images enables us to see the three-dimensional structure of a gun shot.
