After seven decades of prolific work, legendary American photographer Fred Lyon has amassed a large and inspiring portfolio that has been featured in numerous illustrious publications, including TIME and LIFE.
Other than his commercial work, Lyon’s photographic documentation of his hometown, San Francisco, during the prosperous 1940s and 1950s is also evidence of his exceptional eye.
The charm and optimism of one of the most beloved U.S cities during a particularly golden period filled these lovely black and white images—expect to see dapper gentlemen, bustling but not over-crowded streets and the city’s iconic trams.
Lyon’s photographs of mid-20th century are collected in his book San Francisco Then, which you can purchase here.
