A few days ago, Redditer KayBeeToys uploaded a picture of a 388-year-old bonsai plant that was planted in 1626, which had miraculously survived the atomic explosion in Hiroshima back in 1945.
Currently residing at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum at the United States National Arboretum, this incredibly old Japanese White Pine—sometimes known as the “Hiroshima Survivor”—was gifted to the American people by bonsai master Masaru Yamaki in 1976.
The plant was in a nursery on the Yamaki family compound in 1945, which was less than 2 miles from where the nuclear bomb exploded—despite this, it was unharmed due to the high wall around the nursery.
Take a look at where this special bonsai is located at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum by going on a virtual tour here.
