A Lovely Rainbow That Is Made Of Sharp, Forbidding Barbed Wire

People are usually delighted by rainbows, which is why one is likely to be attracted to Bali-based conceptual artist Ole Ukena’s sculpture “Protected Paradise” of a large, 4-meter wide rainbow.

In stark contrast to the popular perception of rainbows—light, cheerful, welcoming—the sculpture is actually made of sharp, prickly barbed wire that is traditionally used to keep people away.

Using the rainbow as a symbol of paradise, the artist wanted to convey the idea that paradise can be protected by a layer of limitation as well—and in a way, it depicts that in order to get to paradise, one must endure suffering.
