Maps are not always carefully crafted and geographically accurate—everyday, people creates spontaneous, hand-drawn maps to direct others from point A to point B.
As an ode to this form of organic cartography, New York-based artist Nobutaka Aozaki has started a project—titled “From Here To There”—where he will create a map of Manhattan that is made up entirely of hand-drawn directions by strangers.
Pretending to be a tourist—a souvenir cap and a shopping bag completes his disguise—he asked New York pedestrians to draw him a map that will direct him to another location.
By piecing together the small scrapes of paper where the maps are drawn, he hopes to make a larger, functioning map of the island.
The project is still on-going and the artist currently has a 10 foot by 3 foot incomplete map of Manhattan.
