Scientists have found a way to make alcohol from coffee grounds, creating an intriguing beverage that smells and tastes like coffee but is capable of getting one drunk.
Combining two of the world’s favorite past-times, this new spirit was first produced from used coffee grounds from a Portuguese coffee roasting company and is named SCG (spent coffee ground) spirit by its creators.
After heating the coffee ground in water, the scientists then “mixed in yeast cells, let the concoction ferment, and concentrated the sample to get a higher alcohol content”, a process similar to the one used to make whiskey and rum.
The only downside to this new beverage is that the brewing process removed the caffeine that was in the coffee.
Now, ordering coffee at the bar could take on a whole new meaning.
