Elaborate Scenes Depict People With Fish Heads Interacting With One Another

Born in Paris, Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard creates elaborate scenes of “people” with fish heads.

Interested in anthropomorphizing animals since young, Becker-Echivard first dressed up her pet rats as a child and was later inspired by fishing alongside Normandy’s fishermen.

Since 1997, Becker-Echivard has created elaborate scenes for her fishy friends to act in, with each scene taking three months to complete.

Once the set is done, she works on creating her fishy characters, buying fish from the market near her home.

The artist detaches their heads to create these surreal figures while the body is consumed.

Becker-Echivard uses fish heads as they are genderless, aiding her in depicting the human condition.

“We are victims of our own evolution or of our own revolution,” she states, and the stunned paralysis of her fishy characters perfectly encapsulate this sentiment.
