There is nothing very interesting about most sight-seeing snap-shots—usually, the subject simply smiles into the camera, against a backdrop of some famous place.
To update this overdone form of travel photography, Oakland-based photographer Alex Wein started a photo project—titled “Headstands”—where he shoots portraits of himself doing headstands at the various places he visits on his travels.
By taking a different perspective, Wein is able to turn sight-seeing photography on its head—pun intended—and make an otherwise typical photograph look just strange enough to be worthy of a closer look.
Many of his Headstands photographs were taken when he was on the great American road trip, and feature both spectacular natural landscapes and bustling urban scenes.
Head to the photographer’s website for more of his topsy-turvy shots.
